Multiple firefox.exe in background processes crashing browser
After a recent automatic update my old problem with Firefox Quantum came back. Every time I open Firefox browser I get multiple 4-6 firefox.exe running in the background processes. When I go into details and try to end process tree it crashes my browser. When I open Firefox it starts all over again. I have gone into about:preferences and
De-select ‘Use recommended performance settings’ Set Content process limit value to ‘1’ from its default value
I have also gone into about:config and switched browser.tabs.remote.autostart to false. Still have the same problem.

Hi activecarbon, 4-6 processes running for Firefox is normal. Crashing is not. Have you submitted any Crash Reports? See this article: Firefox keeps crashing at startup to help resolve the crashes.
How come my firefox browser crashes when I close out the firefox.exe processes in the background of my task manager?
Hi, Those are the processes that Firefox needs to run. When you 'End Task' you are "killing" the browser.
In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>.
Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

@FredMcD, It looks like they are crashing it in Task Manager
activecarbon, To help clarify for you, the processes are all named firefox.exe because they are relevant to operations within the browser. Your extensions, plug-ins, tabs, etc. all require a separate process to run.
I couldn't change the original question - Firefox doesn't crash unless I "end process" in Task Manager....but it is using huge amounts of both memory and disk space. I know this is for Firefox, but the same thing is happening in Chrome. I changed the browsers.tabs.remote.autostart to false, checked about:support, and multiprocess/windows did change from 3/3 to 1/1 and says Enabled by default. If I understood the instructions correctly, the first number should have "reset" to 0?
