Going from POP3 to IMAP for AOL

AOL has switched from POP3 to IMAP. Consequently I have to terminate and reinstal my account In Thunderbird. Thunderbird wont allow me to select IMAP on the reinstall. What can I do or does Thunderbird have to be modified?

Copy the POP account mail to subfolders of Local Folders, remove the POP account from Account Settings, Account Actions, then add the account as IMAP from Account Actions, Add Mail Account.
