It's possible and righfully complicated since it involves a multitude of steps. First, you have to update the version of Thunderbird on the XP machine from 3.1 to a higher version (52.9.1). This is done in incremental jumps '''through each version''' that saw a significant change in [[Profiles - Where Thunderbird stores your messages and other user data|Thunderbird's profile]], instead of a one-step jump from 3.1 to the latest.
