Don't have a close button? Check again with at least two tabs open.

Do you have at least the first four items checked in Tools > Options > Tab

Did you make a configuration choice to not display tabs (or worse installed "Tabs Mix Plus" extension). My choice is 3 - display at end of tab strip.

browser.tabs.closeButtons

  • 0: Display a close button on the active tab only
  • 1: (default) Display a close button on each tab
  • 2: Don't display any close buttons
  • 3: Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)
