firefox updated and almost all of my many bookmarks are completely gone, except for a few. what happened

i turned on my computer and it seemed as if there was a new download for firefox open, it's on my homepage. i opened the original one i had from the list of my applications and all of my bookmarks had disappeared from my bookmarks menu bar, and all my folders (there were many!) except for 3. why did this happen? can i reset it to an earlier date to recover them?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
