When I try to log on to my bank accounts (either NatWest or RBS) when I enter my Customer Number and press the "LOGIN" button, Firefox 17.0.1 hangs completely. When I close it down, it will not reload without re-booting the computer. This problem never occurred before version 17. I have tried starting Firefox in "Safe" mode - same result. Google Chrome works fine and is generally faster than Firefox but I don't like using proprietory products if I can avoid it.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

I regularly clear the cache and all cookies, browsing history, etc. using Glary Utilities. Needless to say, I have tried this and it makes no difference.

Did you check for common errors with loading web pages in the above posted MozillaZine KB article?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Yes - as I said in my original post, I tried it in safe mode - same result. I should perhaps explain that I am a commercial programmer with 30 years experience of computers from mainframes downwards so I have already done all the obvious stuff without success. I would delve into the code to see what is going on but I don't have the time to waste right now - perhaps over the Christmas break if too much strong drink has not been taken!

Make sure that the login isn't using Java. The lockup you are describing sounds a lot like what I am having. The step I am about to try: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/944591

Basically, I click on something needing java, and 17.0.1's world falls apart, leaving me in perpetual hanging until 5 minutes or so later I get a "Script has stopped working" with no right answer.

I tried everything you suggested but to no avail unfortunately - still the same problem. Thanks very much for the suggestion though - it has given me another angle to work on.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.
