Have used the 'email page link' loads of times, but all of a sudden it has stopped working and appears to then default somehow to Internet Explorer, which then throws up the following message 'Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed' When I click on OK the machine goes into a never ending loop of trying to load Internet Explorer and I have to log off to stop the machine working. Don't think I have done anything recently to my PC.

Thanks for that, but my default email is set on Windows7.

Try this simple solution, it worked for me: Go into Firefox, options, advanced, general tab. At the bottom of the option box, under 'System Defaults', make sure 'always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup' is checked. Click ok, and restart Firefox.

I have the exact same problem as the original poster, on 2 computers. I am running FF 21.0, win7 64 bit.

I have tried all the suggested solutions posted here but none worked. I have also tried uninstalling and re-installing FF, no change.

I spent quite some time researching and googling the issue but found no solution so far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Same problem for me too. When I try to send the link via email I get an endless string of IE navigation attempts. And as stated above, Windows Live Mail is already set as my default mail client. But a new twist for me is that my wife's account on the same computer doesn't experience this problem. I've compared the Firefox options and the Windows 7 defaults, and they appear to be the same. This problem seems to have started about the same time as the last Firefox update. Any help would be most appreciated.

Adding Outlook (formally Hotmail) as an e-mail provider involves doing some steps.

Set the gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost pref to true on the about:config page (use its Search bar to locate the pref).

It's value should turn to bold (user set) Open the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer;Ctrl+Shift+K)

Paste this code in the command line (>) in the Web Console and press the Enter key to run the code.

navigator.registerProtocolHandler('mailto','http://mail.live.com/secure/start?action=compose&to=%s','Outlook Mail');

An info bar should open at the top of the page and you can click "Add Application" to add the new mail provider.

Do not forget to reset the gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost pref to false after you have added this e-mail provider.

Now you should see "Outlook Mail" as a choice for Mailto in "Options/Preferences > Applications".

Thanks, but I have no intention of adding Outlook as my default mail client. My mail application is Windows Live Mail, and my problem is exactly the same problem stated by jogger61 on 3/22/13 and 3/23/13. Windows Live Mail has been set as the Windows 7 default mail application, and shows as the Firefox/Options/mailto application. Also, as recommended by wacbr05 on 5/2/13, the box is checked making Firefox the default browser on startup. The problem still exists.
