SOMETHING ADDED A BZAILLION BOOKMARKS TO BOOKMARKS TOOLBAR. TRYING TO DELETE HANGS MACHINE FOR 5-10 minutes

Somethaing added a HUGE amount of bookmarks to my bookmarks toolbar folder (more than a thousand). When I try to select even one bookmark, Firefox hangs for 2-3 minutes. Deleting (I cant tell if it is deleting, there are so many) can take longer. The bookmarks backup file is over 2 megabytes long. I don't want to start from a clean disk, I have bookmarks I want to save. Used to be able to edit with a text editor. I am open to suggestions, thanks in advance for any help.
