With the Firefox 32 update my saved passwords/usernames are gone—how can I retrieve them?

Firefox updated to v32 and my saved passwords/usernames all went away.

I can still see them if I replace the new version of FF with an older one. I've read that they are saved in a new format/file type with 32 so is there a way to import the old file?

If not, is there a way I can keep FF from updating? I'd rather have my old passwords than the new Firefox.

thanks Peter

This seems fixed now with this morning's update 32.0.2.

Thank you, Peter

If it happens again then you can use these steps to force Firefox to reimport the passwords from the signons.sqlite file and rebuild the logins.json file.

  • reset the signon.importedFromSqlite pref on the about:config page to the default value via the right-click context menu
  • delete the logins.json file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed

When you restart Firefox then you should have the signon.importedFromSqlite pref with the value set to true and you should have the passwords imported in the Password Manager unless there may have been errors.

This has happened a few more times now and this morning the "signon.importedFromSqlite" pref no longer appears on the About:Config page.

Is there still a signons.sqlite file present in the Firefox profile folder?

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

Yes—that file is still in the folder—and when I started up this morning the missing passwords have returned.

It's very confusing.

Thanks.

Windows users please follow this steps-

1. Click the Windows Start button and type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox \Profiles\ in the Search box at the bottom of the Start menu, without pressing Enter. A list of profiles will appear at the top of the Start menu.

2. Click on the profile with “default” in the name to open it in a window.

passwords are stored in the key3.db and logins.json files. For more information, see Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox.
  hope it will help users..
