Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own colors.
- Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
Note that these settings affect background images.

You can try to disable OMTC and leave hardware acceleration in Firefox enabled.
- about:config page: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled = false
You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
Sorry your response is unsatisfactory and did no help at all
1 Checked Tools nothing needed to be changed 2. Changed Windows theme to Windows Basic - Boy is it ugly 3. Changed about:config page: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled = false
No change to Firefox. Pages in 34.0.5 are still blank

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.
Okay I dug deeper and it gets worse.
This time not only did I do an uninstall of 33.1.1 but also deleted all the Firefox folders.
I then installed 34.0.5 and the default install pages that show up when you install Firefox looked okay. Then I restored my bookmarks extensions and my settings. That blew it out again.
So once again I did a complete uninstall including deleting all folders and reinstalled 34.0.5. Then I restored my bookmarks not my extensions nor my settings. This sort of worked.
1. Firefox Add-On page did not render correctly. Those some others did 2. Blocked way too many of my bookmarks for which I would have to go allow again. This included my start page which is far more secure than Firefox default start page. 3. Then since I am syncing Firefox it added all my Extensions and yet I could not do anything with them. Froze 4. I am not going to turn off sync and then uninstall and reinstall Firefox 34.0.5 for what would probably be the 20th time so I can manully re-add all 25 of my extensions or however how many of them will work with 34.0.5 especially when the Firefox Add-On page does not render in a readable and usable condition. No kidding
Version 34.0.5 is hereby pronounced not backward compatible with previous released versions of Firefox.
The big change that someone decided needed to be done for some reason wound up throwing under the bus users of previous versions with numerous extensions.
I have spent enough time on this for now. Maybe when verison 40 comes out and I have tons of time to start from scratch on the all the computers on my network I will think about upgrading.

Sad to say, I too have this problem. Can someone please provide a not too technical solution? Basically, I just applied the 'strongly recommended update' (as I've done in the past), and now Firefox opens but doesn't connect to any websites. So I can no longer use Firefox until a solution appears....sadly back to internet explorer. Thanks everyone! Signed, non-technical user fan of Firefox.
Hey, I really hope I can help some of you poor ones who have that problem because I had it, too! Right after upgrading to Version 34.0.5, no webpages displayed any content but a blank. It annoyed me very much, especially since it's hard to get an earlier Firefox version and seemingly impossible to downgrade. What helped me in the end was:
Disabling one of my add-ons, namely "Privacy Defense".
I had to find out what caused the trouble. So I went to reset my Firefox to the original settings, thereby getting rid of all my add-ons. Webpages were working normally as before. I re-downloaded my old add-ons. Everything worked fine. Until I got to "privacy defense" which doesn't even require a restart of Firefox. When I had downloaded it, no webpages would look any other than blank! So I disabled it - and everything was back to normal. So: Tools > add-ons > guilty add-on (for me Privacy Defense) > disable it.
It seems as though certain add-ons aren't compatible with this new Firefox version. So check them. (Also, my contrast settings, colours and fonts I had chosen weren't the problem.) Really hope this helps someone. Good luck!

It appears disabling one of several extensions does the trick. I removed Yoono and all has been good since. Yoono appears to no longer be supported based upon
1. It is no longer listed as a Firefox add-on 2. There have no recent tweets from their Twitter accounts.
For Me I had to disable Shockwave Flash 13.0.0.214. Plugin. Definitely thought I had to reprogram something on my website. Not sure what Im going to do with no flash but Ill just hang out here in the 90s until its fixed.
