Is it still possible to update Firefox by manually installing a MAR file? It seems to update correctly the files but never update the registry keys in Windows..

Hi, I need to update the Firefox on multiple computers where I work. So, after reading this article, https://wiki.mozilla.org/Software_Update:Manually_Installing_a_MAR_file, I prepared my folder containing the full update (Full MAR 36.0) and the updater.exe file. Next, I launch the following command without any problem.

updater.exe C:\Temp\FirefoxUpdate\ "%programfiles(x86)%\Mozilla Firefox" "%programfiles(x86)%\Mozilla Firefox"

In the log file update.status I can see "succeeded". I then launch Firefox to check if everything is in order and indeed the program has been updated to version 36.0. Good! But, when I go in "Add/Remove a program" in the control panel (Windows 7 Ent SP1 x64 French) the line is still indicating that I have the old 35.0.1 version installed. Is this normal? If I launch manually the update, using the full Firefox installer, or if I update Firefox by using the search for update in the "About Firefox" then everything is working correctly, including the "Add/Remove a program". Could someone please confirm that there's indeed a problem?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi guigs2, I finally found the reason why it wasn't working.

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Software_Update:Manually_Installing_a_MAR_file

And I use this method to update Firefox because the user doesn't have to close Firefox when the update is installing. And there's no popup Window, no warning, etc. Unless there's a better way to update Firefox without having to forcefully close the browser of the user when an update is available?

Thanks again for the help!

Hi gboucher,

Thank you for that question, it is strange that the versions till says 35.0.1. However that information may be out of date. It might be easier to update Firefox automatically with a release build. It will update over the current installation and will not remove any profiles:

Mainly Mar files are used to update your own build of Firefox.
