How can I recover my bookmarks and search history? They have disappeared when I opened firefox
I can't work out how to recover my bookmarks and search history. Can anyone guide me with a step by step approach that could help?

Was there any problem or error messages?
Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

I didn't have a profile before, does that make a difference? All the steps I've done and looked up have lead me nowhere
Every user of a computer with Firefox installed has at least one profile. The profile stores all user data; history, bookmarks, settings . . . . .
