Try this add-on and see if it works with Google contacts:

Hello many thanks. Unfourtunately it is still not working. I am not able to implement the google account with tbsync. I just get the information: can`t connect. I tried everything to adjust tbsync. I tried to create a Cal DAV&CardDAV account also an Exchange Activesync. Nothing is working. I hope thunderbird will have another workarround

I installed TbSync and Provider for CalDAV and CardDAV, both by the same author, in TB 78.2.2. I added a Google account in the TbSync options (under Tools on the Menu Bar), completed the OAuth2 authentication (cookies must be enabled in Options/Privacy & Security), and selected Address Book to synchronize. By syncing the account, a Google (Address Book) address book was created in Address Book with my Google contacts. This worked in a profile that doesn't have a Gmail mail account.

Try that and see if you have a better result.
