How do I change the order in the address bar dropdown?
I really like Firefox, but one thing I want to change is the behaviour of the address bar dropdown - where it shows previous sites I've visited. I'm looking for a way to list these in date order - so the most recently visited site is at the top. i.e. How it is in IE!
Is that possible? I'm happy to go in and change any settings or install whichever addons I need to do this.

hello zeel, this article explains how the sorting mechanism in the firefox url-bar works: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/The_Places_frecency_algorithm
though there are some settings to adjust the ranking available when you go to about:config i don't think it is possible to reach your goal exactly by using the means built-into firefox. you could adjust (increase) the value of the places.frecency.*BucketWeight preferences though to boost the ranking of more recent visits and adjust the timespan in days for the different buckets through places.frecency.*BucketCutoff...

Hello philipp,
Thanks very much for the information - that was really useful. I think you're right then that I won't be able to achieve exactly what I'm looking for, which is a shame. But I didn't know about the various places.frecency settings, and with knowledge of the algorithm used I can adjust things somewhat.
Although even my thought now of setting all the places.frecency.*Bonus values to 0, and tinkering with the places.frecency*BucketWeight and *BucketCutoff settings will only succeed in putting addresses in a very rough date order. If I'm understanding right, then at best all pages visited in a day will still not be ranked in visit order, since *BucketCutoff values are measured in days.
As I say - thanks very much again for the information though. While my problem perhaps can't be solved, that has still been very helpful.

Thanks. :) I'd read those articles, and I think I understand now how it all works. Still a bit of a shame I can't get it to do exactly what I'd like (same behaviour as IE). But oh well!
Firefox has totally changed... lost all my bookmarks ...can't find the tabs that used to be on top .. not happy about this unwanted change ...am elderly disabled and need to keep things simple.. guess I find another browser cuz this one sucks... half the time I can't even log in ...back to trying to fix what Firefox screwed up *sigh* thanks for nothing
