Suddenly my gmail can't be read on Thunderbird and I get a message "An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. " I should not bee on a POP 3 server as I have gone into google mail and disbanded POP and enabled IMAP. It was working yesterday.

Any advise would be appreciated.

When you made the change to Gmail did you also re-enter your account in Thunderbird as IMAP? If not then you need to do so.
