"Something is trying to trick Firefox into accepting an insecure update." message box. Caused by Google Earth?
I recently began receiving this message randomly while Firefox was open. I think I have eliminated this by removing Google Earth, which was required by an exercise program, NB GPSMaster. The Google Earth browser plugin does not appear to generate the message while still providing the map for the software. I've posted this hoping it might help someone else. BTW, Google Earth was the only Google program/plugin loaded on my system.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop
- Firefox 37.0.1: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
- Trash the current Firefox application (open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re)install
- Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your personal data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox.
You can check for problems with preferences.
Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
After, do the same with Google Earth. BTW, you can open the Add-ons Manager and disable the Google Earth plugin.
Thanks for the suggestions. The plugin seems to display the map without generating the error box. I really don't want any google product on my iMac if at all possible, so I'll just leave well enough alone. I am so over Microsoft, Google and Android! Current case in point, it is the only thing on my mac that has generated this problem.
