Does your password have any non-alphanumeric characters? Brackets, asterisks, punctuation marks?

If you go to Gmail via the website, you use http and this is quite relaxed about the range of characters you can use. The email protocols (POP, IMAP and SMTP) are rather more restrictive (they are, strictly speaking text-only systems) and cannot handle all the characters that http might permit.
