I would like to add more characters to the "Mark" function, for instance:

Mark > Add Backslash Mark > Add Ampersand Mark > Add n...

Instead of this, you can Tag messages. Tag messages get another color in the tread pane. It is also possible to define custom tags next to the default ones that are shipped with Thunderbird. Go to Tools > Options > Display > Tags to do this.
