I have content process limit set to 1, but I still see 4 processes in my task manager with only 1 window/tab open. Why?

I'm running 58.0.1 on Windows 10. As I said, I already set the process limit to 1 and have shut down/restarted my computer several times since then. Even with only the options tab open, I'm still seeing 4 processes and a constant 40%+ memory usage. I don't use multiple tabs/windows at a time on a regular basis, so I don't need the extra processes clogging my system.

hi, firefox has been remodelled into a multi-process application - the setting in the UI is about controlling in how many processes web content (=your tabs) are split up, but firefox will use other processes for different tasks (one for rendering the main browser ui, one for interfacing with the graphics driver, webextensions, plugins, serviceworkers, etc.) this will not clog up your system but should make it more responsive and stable. a crashing graphics drive won't bring down the whole browser anymore for example.

Ok, but why is Firefox taking up 40%+ of my memory just sitting on the options tab or home page?

firefox on windows 10 with a plain profile will take up 260mb sitting on the options page when i test it here. your mileage may vary depending on your configuration (addons, amount of history, ...)
