Cannot drag email addresses into new list

I have just installed Thunderbird (v72.2.1) for the first time and have imported my address book. I now want to create lists from the main address book. I can create a 'New List' OK, but when I try to select and drag addresses to the new list, it will not let me put them in the sub-list, only into the main address book where the new list was created. I can add entries into the new list by typing in data, but for long lists this is tedious and drag and drop is far more appropriate
