Whenever I try to download updates I get an error message that says "Another program is being installed..." How can I find out what that program is?

I am trying to update my Adobe reader and Java. I am unable to install them because I keep getting a message that says another program is being installed - wait for it to install then download. I also get a similar message when I try to add updates to windows.
