"The tab for the first site I visit via my browser has no 'x' in right hand corner to click on & exit, so, to close, I have to exit Firefox completely. Any further tabs have the 'x' & can be closed. A friend disabled my yahoo toolbar to try to improve speed of my laptop, but should not need toolbar to exit. There is also no back or forward arrow to navigate through open pages or sites. For example, using Google as browser, I open the Yahoo!7 TV guide. If, from TV guide's home page, I navigate to a website about a certain movie or show, I cannot read it and close, returning to home page. The only way out is to close Firefox completely. Then, to return to TV guide, I have to start again from scratch. This is sooooooo frustrating, as is having no back arrow as alternative. Am presuming toolbar required for arrow, but should not need to exit any given page. PLEASE HELP ME B4 i GO CRAZY. Thanks??"

You can set the pref browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to false on the about:config page to get a close X if only one tab is open.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

Thanks for your help, but I have done as you suggested and I now get a close x on the tab, however, when I click on it same thing happens. In my TV guide example, when I click on the x to close movie review, it closes the whole TV guide. Seems nothing works without bulky toolbars????
