I had to uninstall Firefox 5 because I was having too many problems, and things kept disappering. I now want to re-install Firefox, and start anew. Was my problem because I was using 5, and I should use 4?

Firefox 4.0 / 4.0.1 aren't supported any longer, Firefox 5.0 was a security & stability update for those versions. Your choice is either Firefox 5.0.1 or 3.6.19.
