Installed Firefox 17.0.1 and it was intolerably slow. An example was trying to display my orders at Amazon.

Without changing anything else, I re-installed Firefox 16.0.2 and the problems went away. This tells me that the problem isn't Norton, a firewall, or corrupt files, unless YOU changed something in 17.0.1 so that it is more sensitive to these issues than16.0.2 is.

Firefox keeps inviting me to install 17.0.1 but, all evidence to the contrary, I'm smarter than that. It would be nice if you could determine what difference(s) between 16 and 17 could be causing this.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:


  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

This can still be caused by security software that doesn't trust the current Firefox release, but still does trust the previous release.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

OK, rebooted in 'safe mode with network support' and hung on the same page. Task Manager shows Firefox consuming very little CPU and more than 125MB of memory.

Also tried: 1. Disabling the LastPass add-in in Firefox 2. Disabling Norton SS virus and identity protection

I'm now back to 16.0.2 (again) and everything is working.
