This seems to be a common problem that I can't fix with Java or Flash updates. And I don't have Norton Anti-Virus to turn off. I'm on Windows 7.

Firefox frequently crashes when I close it, or when I close a tab, or even sometimes when it gets stuck in bookmarks, strangely. Here are the recent crash reports - from the last 2 weeks:

I realize there was some huge Java exploitation a few months ago, but I had hoped the upgrades would fix things. I suspect it's crashing b/c some malware is still working on the tab or window I'm trying to close. I use Spybot and MWB to try to keep the browser protected.

Any ideas?

Thanks

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Thanks for the reply,

First, the crashes come when I close tabs and windows, not open.

Second, I did already submit crash report data from the browser. I'm happy to submit the data you requested too, but I can't use that shortcut since the windows key isn't on my keyboard. Is there another way? And, can't you use my ffx crash report data?

Only the last crash report was even submitted to Mozilla, and that one was empty - no crashing thread was identified. https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-00f08dd0-52be-4a78-aaa2-49d552130412

The problem with the Norton.

Run Norton Internet Security LiveUpdate. Install the patch from Norton if LiveUpdate issues an installation message. By the current time, an automatic running of LiveUpdate may have installed the patch.

Try with disabling Norton Protection and check it out..

okey as you are not able to open crash report and as the-edmeister said the last crash id doesn't contain any crash report, you can try a clean reinstall.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Ok Guys,

Thanks for the input.

I don't have Norton, like I said before.

I did about:crash to generate the report, yet apparently it's no help. Still, I can see "browser" and "flash" on the various report titles. Doesn't that mean something?

Prefer you just instruct me on how to generate the report w/o a shortcut key rather than attempt I clean re-install. Please advise.

Thanks

Thanks,

These are from the submitted folder, which also happen to be the most recent (I may have recently activated reporting):

Note, I've had crashes more recently, including yesterday. But, don't see a report in the folder for it.

Look forward to your reply.

Ok,

No takers on the requested data? ... amitshree, are you there?

All of those are empty, except for one, which is a generic Flash Crash. So we will have to use a shotgun approach to narrow down the cause of the crashes:

Update Firefox: Ensure you are running Firefox 20.0.1 Update Firefox to the latest release

Scan for Malware: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware

Update Windows

Update your Graphics Driver Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

Update your Plugins https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

more options

One of those crashes is not found, two are empty and one relates to Flash player.

As a troubleshooting procedure please disable the Flash player plugin, or uninstall it, and then try to see if you still get crashes whilst in Firefox's SafeMode.

If crashes continue please paste another 5 of the crash reports into your next post. If crashes cease then please try in safemode but this time with Flash Player enabled, and again paste crash reports into your next post.

Thanks guys,

- Firefox is updated. - Plugins are all updated. - I have done malware scans with MWB and Spybot, didn't detect probs..

-Checking graphics driver now - kind of suspicious the Nvidia control center won't let me check for updates. by using their site, I see I'm only slightly behind the most recent. I have updated recently and it didn't change things vis a vis firefox.

I'll give disabling flash a try, but I am very recently up to date on the version. I have had some slowness with Youtube that I suspected might be flash related. Perhaps the Flash cache is overloaded, if that is a thing?

To be clear, Firefox crashes have occurred before and after Flash updates.

Will post again after these steps.

Please send more suggestions if you've got 'em.

Graphics driver now updated too,

What now?

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Do you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" ?

more options

Thanks cor-el,

Don't have Real Player plugin.

Flash:

- don't know about protect mode settings, beyond me - ditto hardware acceleration - Flash crashing on close seems possible (from second link) but don't think safe mode will prove anything b.c it happens infrequently I get Firefox crashing just a few times a week.

I do not use clear history on close option.

Anyway ...

I did enable crash reports and posted some of them. Apparently they are empty, which doesn't say much for the reporting system. However, I can see in the report titles "browser" or "flash" which ought to mean something, right?

Flash plugin crashing on close sounds possible. But how would Flash safe mode fix it, as suggested? Isn't there an update that corrects this, or a settings change?

Besides, why would a plugin crash cause the entire computer to crash? and not just crash Firefox? This is fishy.

Ideas?

Firefox safemode is intended for troubleshooting rather than as any permanent solution. One of the features of safemode is that it turns off hardware acceleration. If you crash in safe mode it should give a more meaningful crash report. If you do not get crashes in safemode it helps suggest what to look at, as possible causes.

If you are getting crashes when using Flashplayer then turning off hardware acceleration, and turning off protected mode are two settings that may help.

if the whole computer is crashing then that may explain the empty crash reports. Does your computer crash only when using Firefox ?

john99

yes, it's the whole computer crashing when I have a firefox issue.

i'll try to close my firefox window, or sometimes even a tab, (it's even tripped up once when I went into my bookmarks folders) and firefox freezes for an instant and then the whole computer crashes with a blue screen mini dump.

so, yes the reports are probably empty because the whole system goes down.

that said, what do you suggest?

more options

Do the crashes still occur if you disable the Flash plugin as a test?

See "Last resort" in this Adobe article: "How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?"

more options

like I said, crashing happens just a few times a week. it could take a while to know if that makes a difference.

let's assume flash is the issue, most likely it crashes when it's being shut down due to the window/tab being closed. so what could I do about it? i'd like to have flash on my browser. should I:

- disable protected mode? - go back to the previous version - it crashed on that too?

isn't it possible that flash is occasionally being exploited and that's why it won't close correctly?

thanks all

If the whole computer is crashing, the next place I'd check is the memory - there are a lot of memory operations going on when Firefox closes, as it's unloading everything from memory and generally cleaning up after itself as it exits, and hitting a memory defect in the middle of this process can bring down the whole system via memory corruption if the circumstances are right.

memtest86 can be used overnight to determine if there's bad memory in the system, and some versions of Microsoft Windows include a built in memory diagnostic.
