Long attachment filenames truncating

Just within the past month attachments (mostly Excel files but a zip file also) with long file names have been coming through truncated. Some missing just the "s" from .xls some missing the whole extension - depending upon the length of the file name. These are subscription files that have been coming through just fine for years and now they're truncating again. I say "again" because this happened a few years ago but I can't remember whose fault it was. This time I know it's Thunderbird because other clients who use other email programs are not having the problem and I even sent it to my web based personal account and the files are fine. And the attachments are in good shape if you just type in the missing letters but most of these get filtered to other recipients and they don't know that.

Anybody know what's going on? I tried adding that Chrome folder and file but that post was for Thunderbird 8 and before. I have 31.2.0 loaded. Thanks.

Windows has an absolute limit of 255 characters for a file name, including the path starting with the drive letter.

Secondly the same would most likely apply to Thunderbird internally as 255 is the limit of a basic integer in the C programing language, so all older code (Windows is 20, Thunderbird 10) will inherently see this limitation somewhere.

With 644Bit operating systems, these limits are disappearing (no one uses that style of integer) It is also the reason Windows XP could only see 4Gb of memory.

Note that Thunderbird does not unpack zip files at any time so anything amiss in them is not something Thunderbird has done. Your anti virus however may well unpack zip attachments.
