The subject disappears when I reply to a message

The message subject disappears when I reply to a message so neither I nor the recipients see it, the field is just empty.

This does not happen when I compose a new message, but if I reply to a message I originally sent the subject promptly disappears - so it does not matter if I composed it originally or someone else.

This is very inconvenient, does anyone know what is going on?

does this happen if you start Thunderbird in safe mode with all add-ons disabled? Hold shift while you start Thunderbird.

I have been using Firebird for a few years but this problem is suddenly happeinng more frequently. yeaterday it happened twice. Grateful for any furthe help.
