I had to delete my old account and create a new, identical one; how can I get the 'Local Folders' to now appear as part of my new account?

more options

I had problems with my ISP (TalkTalk) which could only be resolved by deleting my existing, single, Thunderbird account and creating a new one. This was, as far as I could manage, identical with the previous account. This now sends and receives messages OK. However, I now have the new account at the top of the list on the left (with my email name) with its own Inbox, Sent, Trash etc, followed by 'Local Folders' containing all my old folders.

How can I get these to merge into one consolidated account list? Using Unified View only re-arranges them, and does not help.

If you have created a POP mail account, then you could turn it into a deferred account also called a Global account.

This would send all emails into 'Local Folders' and hide the pop mail account and its folders, so only the 'Local Folders' is seen in the Folder Pane.

All info is here:

Suggest you perform all the changes in 'Offline' mode, so emails do not come through to pop Inbox whilst changes are being done. Remember to move all emails from all all folders pop mail account into Local Folders first. Work through all the sections as described at the link. Finally when all is set up, restart Thunderbird before you go back to online mode - this is important. You do not want to link with server until after restarting Thunderbird.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I had already found that link.

Unfortunately when I click the 'Advanced' button, there is no sign of any reference to a global inbox. There are just several options related to an IMAP server.

My version of Thunderbird is 38.4.0.

That means you do not have a POP mail account. You have an IMAP mail account. Global Inbox can only be used on POP mail accounts as it is a straight forward downloading from server Inbox to Thunderbird pop mail account Inbox. Those emails are stored in the Thunderbird profile pop mail account and do not sychronise with the server. Imap accounts see a remote view of the server and imap folders synchronise with the server folders. Anything in 'Local Folders' is on your computer and cannot sychronise with the server imap mail account folders.

Thanks for that. I was offered IMAP as default.

I followed the instructions and deleted my account, and re-created it as a POP account, using the information supplied by the Account Settings wizard in Thunderbird. This advised that my server name would be mail.tiscali.co.uk on port 110. TalkTalk's setup pages suggest server a name of pop.tiscali.co.uk, with the same port. Neither of these will upload my messages from the server. Using the pop.tiscali.co.uk name gives an error. Using the mail.tiscali.co.uk name just does nothing - no upload but no errors.

I then reversed the process, re-creating an IMAP account.Again Thunderbird suggested mail.tiscali.co.uk and TalkTalk suggested imap.tiscali.co.uk. The former will not receive messages, the latter does attempt to connect and asks me for my password, but has failed to connect. I suspect that this is Tiscali/Talktalk.

Ideally what I would like is a POP account that works both ways!

I must add that outgoing mail has worked OK, and that I can see and respond to messages on the webmail server using my browser.

My problem has now changed into one of not being able to receive messages. I consider the original question now resolved and I will post my current problem separately.
