Can we see the whole error message please? Very likely this error comes from a server, not Thunderbird.

Maybe Gmail?

Searching for error message 76989 found this on internet. http://www.gmail-technical-support.net/blog/how-to-fix-your-gmail-error-76989/ and https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmail/2RPrrWUUYzg

The advice in the last one is to logout and login to your account and it will go away (?) Maybe just going offline will help
