Cannot add an additional email account - error message regarding password but pw is correct

I use Thunderbird, from which I manage 3 Gmail accounts. I wanted to add a new one but during Mail Account Setup (File > New > Existing Mail Account and also using Account Actions) I keep getting the error message:

Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?

Username and pw are correct. What now? Thank you!
