Login status lost across sessions
My Firefox (48esr) has started losing login status--especially for one site I visit frequently--when I close it and later restart. It did not formerly do this...logins were persistent if so set.
I did a bit back install a cookie manager extension that I did not like, and uninstalled it. I suspect it may have changed something in settings and not reverted them when I uninstalled...maybe.
Pic shows current cookie settings.
What do I need to change so login cookies are retained if set to on the site login page?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).
Go to the site. After, Close Firefox. Wait 30 seconds. Go to the site again in Safe Mode. Is the problem still there?
Doing the safe mode round trip, the second open DID retain the login.
When I opened in regular mode after that, I was logged in, but one trip out and back, and login was gone.
Ack reply I posted gone after I went back not it to edit. phoo
Round trip in safe mode...login retained on second time in.
When I went back to regular mode, I was still logged in, but one trip out and in, and login was gone.
Any of the items in pic look to be the cause?

It could be the work of one of your add-ons. Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>)<Shift> A)
In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.
Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.
If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.
Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.
Sigh. Been through this time consuming process before. So, yet again.
Did you look at the config entries? A few there look like they could cause this.
Found the problem---it was that previous, now removed, extension. It had set lots of sites in Options>Privacy>History>Exceptions to "Allow for Session."
When I removed the extension, it did not revert the things it had set.
That was very good work. Well done.
Some add-ons are like that.
Well, I spoke way too quickly...
Now I am observing that removing those lines of "Allow for session" did NOT solve the issue.
Ever far more perplexing, and scary, is that adding lines (both for http and https) set to ALLOW seems to have had no effect whatsoever!
I am back to being at a complete loss.
I am using one site as the primary test for this: https://www.dslreports.com I log in. Cookies are as in pic 1. Close tab. Close Firefox. Open Firefox. Cookies are as in pic 2 will be added on edit
Why is this when the site is set to ALLOW? BREAK BREAK BREAK BREAK BREAK BREAK BREAK BREAK
I do not know what is gong on. I tested this 3 times before posting above. now as I am doing it to get the pics, I am still logged in on return. This is crazy. DO not need to reply until I am sure if the symptoms are here or not.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
