Hello everybody,

When I open a message in the in-box, I see right below appearing a line behind the amount of read and unread messages.

It indicates now 80 %, when I move my mouse over that bar, i see IMAP-quotom xx KB of xx KB used, Click for details.

Is that an indication of my mailbox-size on the server where my e-mail account is located, or is this something local on my HD?

Can I change the size of one or both ?

It is an indication of your quota usage per your mail server. Thunderbird has no involvement in this, but as a messenger.

Note that the usage reports for some servers are little better than fiction. Check on your providers web site as to the validity of the information being reported by Thunderbird.
