Small window lower left says "waiting for ...." various websites greatly delays Firefox 56 from reaching the intended web page.
When trying to reach a site like CNN, a small window opens in the lower left corner that says Firefox is waiting for CNN for about 5 seconds. Then it'll say "waiting for cdn.cnn.com" for a few more seconds. Then it'll do this same thing for about a half dozen other sites, always waiting, until it finally will reach and open CNN, which takes about 15 seconds. I have chrome installed also and it does not do this - it'll go to CNN instantly. Please help.

As to the slow loading, is this on all websites, some, a few?
You are running a unsupported and insecure browser. Please update to ver 57+ before force updated https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ or go to the Extended Release Version https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ .

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
- do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-extensions-themes-to-fix-problems
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Thanks for the response but none of these worked. I think the real question is not why is Firefox "waiting" to go to these intermediate websites, but rather, why is Firefox trying to go to these intermediate websites in the first place. Chrome doesn't feel the need to go there ! I think this is the real question that needs to be addressed.

You mention seeing the message 'waiting for cdn.cnn.com' - 'CDN' stands for 'Content Delivery (or Distribution) Network'.
Would you please take a look at this article :
See also the timings in the Network Monitor.
If necessary use "Ctrl+F5" or "Ctrl+Shift+R" to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

Thanks for the response. That was an interesting article and probably explains the half dozen URL's I see flash across that small window. But a CDN is supposed to improve service, not make it worse. So, back to the original question - why does my Firefox take so long to wade through the CDN while other browsers flash right throught it ?
Stab in the dark, but would you check to see if you have Shockwave Flash set to 'Ask to Activate' in Add-ons => plugins ? This should prevent automatic loading of unwanted Flash content and speed things up a little.
By the way : have you updated your Adobe Flash yet, as suggested by both FredMcD and Pkshadow ?
'Don't know which extensions you have installed (if any), but you could consider uBlock Origin to block certain content, thus speeding things up.

I had disabled all my extensions and it didn't help. And to answer your earlier message - yes, I have Flash set to "ask" and it is updated to the latest. I've cleared the cache and cookies and all that stuff. I'm running out of ideas. I'd really hate to abandon Firefox. I've been with them an awfully long time, going back to Netscape, and even Mosaic days.
Another stab in the dark :
Would you please take a look at the Chosen Solution in this thread :

Would that work for you ?

Here are my settings:
Accessibility Activated false Prevent Accessibility 0 Accessible Handler Used true
I'm on Firefox 56 - under Permissions, there is no setting about preventing accessability. So what do I do ?

What's already been suggested by Pkshadow : update to Firefox 57 ......
You could also turn off multi-process (e10s) - unless it's already turned off :
Type in the address bar about:config (press Enter) (promise to be careful, if asked)
Type in the search bar and look for the preferences :
browser.tabs.remote.autostart (its value should be set to false by default) and : browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 and set its value to false
Then close and restart Firefox.
If that doesn't make a difference either, I can only hope that somebody else will come to your rescue .......

I've already tried the e10S trick, with no luck.
I'm not sure about Firefox 57. Lose many of my extensions and totally different UI. Problems of slowness still being reported and no guarantee my problem will be solved. Maybe it's time for a change. I want to thank you for all the help you gave me - I truly appreciate it.
Firefox needs to retrieve files from involved CDN servers, so there are two possibilities when there is an exceptionally long waiting occurring. This can either be something internal to Firefox (including extensions) or an external cause (including security software and your network connection and ISP).
Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
- download the Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop
*https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.
- do NOT remove "personal data" When you uninstall the current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
- (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
- (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
- it is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data When you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data When you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
If you keep having problems then you can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.
