I use Thunderbird for email. I have to download my email and read it offline. This has always worked just fine. But today, when I ask Thunderbird to check my email, it will show that it's connecting to the server, but then it doesn't check for new messages. I don't get a message saying there are no messages. I don't get an error message saying there's a problem of any kind. It just never actually checks for messages, nor does it tell me there aren't any.

I have checked via webmail and there ARE new messages on the server. But I can't download them to Thunderbird all of a sudden.

What could cause this? Is anyone else having this problem? How to fix it?

I actually solved it, but I don't really understand why it worked. I turned off email scanning and de-encrypted my password. Then I rebooted. Now it works. I turned back on the email scanning AND encrypted password and it STILL works.

I had previously tried rebooting and it didn't work. But apparently turning things off and then on again made some kind of difference?

I don't know. Maybe the fix won't last. But for now I'm up and running.
