Remove Thunderbird. Uninstall it, but do not remove and data if the programs uninstalling offer to do that.
Reboot windows, open you word processing application and browser, just to be sure the fun has not moved to another regularly used app. Reinstall Thunderbird from thunderbird.net
I have seen similar fun and games. not with Thunderbird but other progams and it is usually caused by a program asking to update a DLL that is in use. hoever Thunderbird does not use "shared" dlls that it updates.
Usually this is a "helper" application from an anti virus program that is particularly unhelpful. But uninstalling should allow the change to occur without Thunderbird and a new install should reset the registry.
I tried to uninstall.. I get the same window popup

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. There may be a problem that simple starting in safe mode and then running thunderbird can fix.
Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
I tried using the restart in safe mode with networking but the issue still exists.

How do I uninstall Thunderbird without losing all my data? I have looked at the Windows system uninstall button but there is nothing that says Do Not Remove personal data. I have tried all methods to try and get Thunderbird to run for the last four hours without any success. Can you please help me.
