Thank you, Matt. In following your advice, I got stuck at: "click the calendar name in the list on the left", because I saw no list. I found the answer in: View > Calendar > Calendar Pane > Calendar List.

I don't use the menu as it affects the selected calendar and does not provide a list of calendars. Open a calendar tab, right click the calendar name in the list on the left and select delete from the menu.

obviously you have turned off the viewing of the calendar pane then. Otherwise accessing something on the view menu would not have "found" it. We are not mind readers and can only act on the information you supply. In this case you did not say you had turned of that pane, or that you could not see the list so I could guess what you had done.
