How do I stop Firefox from constantly popping up that there is a new version?

more options

The last time I updated Firefox it forgot my open tabs and browsing history. I never want to update Firefox again so how do I disable this annoying popup about a new version? If I cannot eliminate this I will change to another browser.

You should use an up-to-date browser because, unfortunately, security flaws keep getting discovered in older versions.

Just in case your Firefox updates, I suggest making a backup now:

Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles

You can copy certain files with Firefox closed from another profile folder to backup your personal data. Note that best is to avoid restoring a full profile folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • favicons: favicons.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (encrypted logins) and key4.db (decryption key and primary password) for logins saved in the Password Manager
  • cert9.db for certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words added to the spell checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

Thanks for the link to the article. "The refresh feature removes add-ons normally stored inside the Firefox profile folder " It deletes a lot more than that. Just look at the list at the bottom of the article. Why would Firefox be so self-destructive during a refresh? It's time for a different browser that doesn't delete almost everything when you upgrade. Thanks for your response.

No one is suggesting that you use the Refresh/tune-up feature.

Every day, tens of millions of Firefox updates go exactly as planned with zero data loss or settings loss. But we know that even a 0.001% failure rate affects a lot of users and that is why we suggested you make a backup if you cannot accept any risk of data loss.
