Check the Processes tab in the Task Manager (XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vista: Shift+Ctrl+ESC) if there are hanging Firefox processes.
If you see any firefox.exe processes then click the End button to end those Firefox processes.
You can only start Firefox in Safe mode or launch the Profile Manager if all Firefox processes are ended.
Use complete path to firefox. In the Start > Run box in XP, the path would be (for a standard installation of Firefox):
- "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
- be sure to include the quotation marks since there are spaces in the full path
- you can try -PM or -P instead of -profilemanager at the end of that line
