I have recently upgraded to ubuntu 10.10. My firefox icons on the navigation bar have lost their colour - they are just white now. How do I restore the colours on back and forward buttons etc???

Try a different icon set (Gnome Control Center > Appearance > Theme > Customize > Icons). I use Tango on openSUSE 11.4, but you can try others until you find one that you like.
