Fireox 4 does not seem to ask for log-in details or use auto-complete as did the previous version; why?

Since downloading Firefox 4 I have not been asked to save my log-in and password as it used to do. Also the auto-complete aspect that on the previous version would fill in the username, once I provided the first letter, on my Hotmail no longer seems to work. I have followed the instructions as per the help pages but to no avail. My question is: what has happened to the auto-complete and what has happened to Firefox asking about saving log-in details and passwords.

Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode.

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Uncheck: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

Thank you cor-el for your reply. Having already tried what you suggest, and re-tried it just now, it seems to make no difference whatsoever. However, I will continue to look on the help options and try any remedy that seems likely; I am ever hopeful!

Alas the old addage here seems to ring true, with regard to yet another 'new version' of a product such as Firefox, that "if it ain't broke then don't fix it!" Cheers, Nick.

I assume that you already have set Firefox to remember passwords?

  • Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Remember passwords for sites"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in Safe mode:

  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)
