What does it mean when things load only if I move the mouse?

Well, sometimes after a prolonged session the web doesn't load unless I move my mouse around a bit.

For instance, I click a link to something, the tab icon shows a sign of loading for about half a second and then it just stops. If I move the cursor with the mouse (or trackpad), the loading continues and finishes.

This problem resolves itself when I restart Firefox, but I still want to know its cause and how I can prevent it.

I don't know what to make of this, and the circumstances are odd enough that Google is not helping me figure this out for myself. So I'd like to know if anyone can help me out.

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
