I can't use my topsite as my new tab page as the gadgetsearch is keep popping up. I change browser.newtab.url to about:newtab but it is still not working

Are you able to change the browser.newtab.url pref?

You can do a search on the about:config page for prefs that match that website and reset them via the right-click context menu.
