If the original email was generated in a non standards manner then Thunderbird will loose the images. Not in error, but in Thunderbirds correction of the mail format losses the incorrectly attached images.
Forwarding as an attachment (right click forward as > attachment) will bypass this as the mail as an attachment can be forwarded without change.
