Click new tab adjacent to an open tab rather than use the "open new tab button" on toolbar
I have two computers. One of them (my preferred approach) has a "blank" tab adjacent to an existing open tab. When I click it a new tab opens. On my other computer I have only a + sign in the toolbar in the upper right, and this opens a new tab. This confuses some of the people in the household. I would like to have a consistent way to open new tabs. The best approach is the "blank" tab. How do I go about selecting this option. Thank you in advance

I've solved my own problem. I opened "customize", dragged the items on the toolbar back into the customize box (thus eliminating them), and clicked "restore defaults."

Not quite there. I probably should have been clearer. There is a "phantom new tab" adjacent to the open tab. This phantom tab has a + sign. When I click it, a new tab opens. This is the configuration I want to enable on my second computer. Instead, the second computer has a + in the toolbar. I would like to eliminate the + in the toolbar and just have the "phantom tab." Is there a way to do that?

That was very good work. Well done.
