In the list of possible applications for opening a certain filetype, I cannot find the one I want. Not long ago it was possible to set *manually* the path to the desired application, but now the `choose helper application` does not allow me to do that. What can I do to set manually my prefered application? As a side question, where firefox did find the already listed applications?

Chosen solution

Thanks for the reply.

The problem is that the drop down menu allows me to choose other applications, but not to give the path to the custom one I actually want to use. See the screenshots.

Then, I could not do what is explained in http://mzl.la/1xKrEoo because the file type was not listed there.

However, I could make it appear on the firefox preferences by first choosing whatever application firefox proposed me to open the file, and enabling the box `always use that application`. Finally, when modifying the default application for that type of file in the firefox preferences, I had a dialog box allowing me to set the path manually.

I wish however that such dialog box were directly accessible instead of the `choose helper application`.

Hi there,

I believe it chooses it based on the recommend apps for the file type. However you can choose another file type when you click on the drop down next to the listed application.

Please see http://mzl.la/1xKrEoo for more information on how to select other applications not listed.

Hugora, you may also find this extra information useful, it seems SeaMonkey used to let you add your own MIME type with some customization, however it is not supported here. http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions - Just some extra info.

Thanks for the tip. I should consider trying seamonkey some day.
