Running 68.3.1 with dark theme and unread emails are no longer blue
Running dark theme. It worked until about Dec.15 when some update hosed the color scheme. Before then unread emails would appear as blue in the message list pane and when you read the email it would become white t. Now it is white all the time. I checked the configuration file and it is set to blue. I want my blue back.

Chosen solution
Well I finally got it to display like I wanted, unread messages in blue using the userChrome.css file. The last issue was my fault, when trying to solve my problem I had unchecked Automatically mark messages as read' and 'Immediately on display, my mistake
Yes I think Dark Theme changed its standard behavior in December.
Thanks for all the help.

So where is the equal sign in the image Toad-Hall just sent? Lou
There are no equals signs in the code. They get inserted in posts in this forum because the forum software is deficient. Just copy the code that has been posted twice or type in what you see in the picture.
re :At the end of the moz-appearance and color lines, there is a piece missing = !important.
Sorry to cause confusion, but the = sign in this context meant 'missing code is ', but it is very clear what is wrong when you compare your image of 'userchrome.css' and my image showing correct content especially if you look at the end of the lines I meantioned and can see the !important bit that is missing from your code.
Well I inserted the !important text into my userChrome.css file. Unfortunately that did not fix my issue of displaying the unread messages in the right hand summary pane in blue. Like I mentioned earlier this worked for about a month after I installed Thunderbird in Windows 10 and suddenly broke around Dec. 15. I am enclosing my current and final userChrome.css file. I am ready to give up. Thanks for all your help.

The css fie looks right, so the only remaining possibility is that it is in the wrong location. Post a picture as in the previous post that shows exactly where the chrome folder and the css file are stored.
Again, the chrome folder must be in the profile folder
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\8characters.default (Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles, to find the exact name of the profile folder in use.)
and the css file must be in the chrome folder.
location of file
Your chrome folder is in the Profiles folder, not the profile folder. Open the Profiles folder and you should see subfolders named like pgc8ftns.default or similar. Move the chrome folder into pgc8ftns.default, or whatever the name is on your system.
Well I sort of got it to work., but not really. I moved the chrome folder to the Profiles subdirectory where all my data resides. it was called 70vxdb1x.default-release. When I restarted Thunderbird all my emails since Dec 19, 2019 were in blue. But the problem is there was no way to unblue them. Reading them does not unblue them. All new messages coming into Thunderbird are also permanently blue. Weird. I went back to the old configuration as permanently blue does not help

You must have some other setting that is not marking messages as read. Tools/Options/Display/Advanced, check the box 'Automatically mark messages as read' and 'Immediately on display'.
changed
In dark theme unread messages no longer shown in blue to distinguish from tagged messages

sfhowes,
Thank you so much, It took a bit to figure how to get the Chrome Folder and userChrome.css where they should be, but they are there now. I could not figure what code belonged in userChrome.css, but I did finally start from the beginning and found the code at the start this post, Thank you very much. In the end, everything is back to the way I was hoping it would be. All is right with the world now. Again, Thank you, Wayne
While this may be a 'fix' to many, why should I have to go and configure or make changes to something that was working just fine until an update? I don't want to have to go into files and edit them from something that was working prior to an update.
only1too If you want something that is not set as default then you have the choice to change it or not. You either use the solution to modify to create something you want or you live with the default. It is entirely up to you. But making the changes means you need to have the following skills:
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to create folders and files.
- Ability to copy and paste supplied text.
- Ability to save a file.
Most people will have those abilities in their skill set and therefore will not have a problem. There is no requirement to have the ability to write code.

It was a setting that occurred when I chose the dark theme. Suddenly, it stopped working. I had changed nothing.
Ability to follow instructions Ability to create folders and files. Ability to copy and paste supplied text. Ability to save a file.
Has nothing to do with why it stopped working and no one should have to do any of the above. It shouldn't have ever been an issue.
only1too re :It was a setting that occurred when I chose the dark theme. Suddenly, it stopped working. I had changed nothing. I cannot explain it any clearer. The blue font was only default for a few weeks in one version as a temp trial fix for a specified reading issue before it was updated to the current setting in the next version. You did not need to do anything because the default was reverted back with improvements on the next update. This means the default was automatically changed.
So if you want anything other than the current default you have to change it and to change it, you need to apply a given skill set and use the information already provided as the 'Chosen Solution'. This is very simple to understand. The solution has been provided. Please apply the 'Chosen Solution' or live with the default.
