I'm setting up a user on a new computer. I've exported her bookmarks from her old computer. On the new computer I go to Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > (select bookmarks toolbar) > Import and Backup > Import bookmarks from HTML. I browse to my folder containing the bookmarks.html file, Open it, and nothing.

I've tried all the suggestions I can find. Places Database Verify Integrity gives me: > Task: checkIntegrity + The places.sqlite database is sane + The favicons.sqlite database is sane > Task: checkCoherence + The database is coherent etc. Opening the bookmarks.html file shows a list of bookmarks. That file is not empty.

This shouldn't be this hard. How do I accomplish this?

Cor-el, again, thanks for your reply. Here's what I did ... All the 'Bookmarks toolbar' bookmarks were in a 2nd folder with the same name. I could figure out a way to move them all to the top 'Bookmarks toolbar' folder, so I dragged the one-by-one to that folder and the each appeared in the toolbar, in turn, after dragging.

But that's not all. Normally there should have been about a dozen bookmarks and bookmark folders, but I did the the html import several times with no visible result. Therefore, I had several sets of the same bookmarks and folders, repeated. Again, I found no way to select and delete all the extra bookmarks and folders at once, so I deleted these, one-by-one. Now, I believe things are as they were.

In short, this 'import' function leads a lot to be desired. A function that is not used every day should be very intuitive. I neither saw the imported bookmarks, nor had any feedback on where they were going, nor any guidance on how to import into the correct places.

But, thanks or your help on this!

Did you try to search for one of the bookmarks in case the bookmark are in an other, unexpected, location like under the Bookmarks Menu folder? Does "Show Statistics" (below "Verify Integrity") the presence of bookmarks?

Thanks for your response. If I click on Bookmarks, it drops down a list of presumably bookmarks; some of which are listed singly, some of which are on sub-menus. The first one listed is "Bookmarks Toolbar", which says "(Empty)". Further down is another "Bookmarks Toolbar". If I click on it I see a lot of bookmarks, presumably the ones I've imported.

On View > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar, it is set to "Always Show". Nothing shows on the Bookmarks toolbar.

Do you see them in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) and in the sidebar in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder?

Make sure toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible. Open the Customize page and set what toolbars (Show/Hide Toolbars) and toolbar items to display.

  • Right-click empty toolbar area => Customize
  • "3-bar" menu button => Customize
  • View -> Toolbars
    *you can tap the Alt key or press the F10 key to show the hidden Menu Bar temporarily
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is in the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar, drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize page to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette, drag them back from the Customize page to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette, click Restore Defaults in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.

Note that if you use the Default Bookmark Folder extension, then you should disable this extension when you import an HTML backup.
