My browser's started to open with a blank Bookmarks toolbar (existent but blank), and the only tab being a blank 'New Tab' (session not restored). Why?

SESSION RESTORE

  • Conditions satisfy "When session restore occurs".
  • It's configured.
  • Previous session not closed incorrectly.
  • Settings correct.
  • Only just, intermittently, started.

LOST BOOKMARKS

I refer to https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost%20Bookmarks

  • Toolbar buttons working. Don't have Norton.
  • Haven't imported bookmarks.
  • Not after installing add-on for 1st time. Could be after an update - but it's occurred more than once (intermittently) since the 1 add-on updated.
  • Browser hasn't created new profile.
  • Bookmarks file not corrupted.

Bookmarks not saved

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Bookmarks%20not%20saved

If it doesn't help :

Check that the Bookmarks Toolbar is visible and that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is still placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"

  • Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout" and check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" or other items that are missing in the toolbar palette or on a toolbar then click the "Restore Default Set" button

Bookmarks are saved. They only appear lost.

I'm able to add new bookmarks. Changes aren't lost when I restart the browser.

Cor-el:

Did you check for problems with the file places.sqlite in the Firefox Profile Folder ?

   http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

That file stores the bookmarks and the history and problems with that file can make the bookmarks disappear.

Check and tell if its working.

SESSION RESTORE

My browser doesn't work normally on first opening it. The problems occur when first starting, but not usually later. I assume from http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox , therefore, that places.sqlite is corrupted.

The problems are

1. It often shows twice in the taskbar. On exiting 1 instance, the other won't open and I have to exit that. It's pinned to the taskbar, and I find I can't open it again unless I unpin it then exit.

or

1. It shows twice in the taskbar. On exiting 1 instance, the other's in the top left corner of my screen and only about 3cm x 3cm in size.

then

2. Following either of the above, it sometimes opens to show a blank New Tab (session not restored).

or

2. Following either of the above, it opens tabs - but not all the tabs that were open when it closed. Instead, it'll open those from shortly before. Unlike other problems, this has been the case for as long as I can remember.

Session Restore's often grayed out.

I'm a bit simple with these things. Can I recover lost tabs without going through them manually?

Check that the Bookmarks Toolbar is visible and that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is still placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

If the menu bar is hidden then press F10 or hold down the Alt key, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear.

Make sure that you do not use Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox.
If you use Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox then restoring tabs from the last session ("Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.

Make sure that you do not have cleanup or other software that clears data from files in the Firefox Profile Folder

LOST BOOKMARKS

The bookmarks toolbar is nearly always visible.

On following mha007's advice, my bookmarks re-appeared but immediately replaced 'Bookmarks Toolbar items'.

I've just clicked View > Toolbars > Customize, and instantly the contents of my bookmarks toolbar were replaced with 'Bookmarks Toolbar items'. On cancelling, 'Bookmarks Toolbar items' was replaced with the toolbar contents again.

If I have a problem with this again, would I need to show 'Bookmarks Toolbar items'? If so, how would I show it at the same time as the toolbar contents? I clicked 'Restore Default Set' when mha007 suggested it.

SESSION RESTORE

I don't use Clear Recent History.

I only use TweakNow PowerPack 2011 SP1c. In the 'Clean Traces from Web Browser' part of this, offline cache files are deleted, but not 'cache files' or internet history.
