Clear messages off server when downloading/erasing messages on server

Here is the problem:

I want to clear messages off the server but when downloaded to Thunderbird, I want to keep them in Thunderbird even when they are cleared off the server. Then there are messages that I want to clear off the server and NOT be downloaded to Thunderbird.

Is there some special setting so these accounts act independently, and I manually handle messages. With Eudora, I was able to clear messages from the server. Everything that was cleared before I downloaded would not be downloaded onto Thunderbird. When I wanted to download and save a message in Eudora it would disappear from my server (which is what I want).

The two seem to work together...whatever I do in my online account over webmail is also done in my Thunderbird account. I do not want that. I want it to work the way Eudora did.

Learn the differences between IMAP and POP mail accounts and set up the one in Thunderbird you want. See the knowledge base article https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/glossary-terms-including-types-accounts#w_mail-accounts

Sound to me like you have IMAP and want POP.
