My accumulated e-mail list is so long that I think it having an effect on the Thunderbird performance, and there are many of the e-mails that I wish to save. Can you advise me how I can save e-mails that I will be able to refer to at a later date?

Thanks,

Dennis A

  1. Store email in local folders
  2. Housekeeping: remove the biggest attachments from your email, store them offline
  3. Use a faster hard disk: storing email locally on an SSD makes a huge difference

There may be other fine-tuning possible but I've had the best results following the above.

Thank you: I guess I don't know how to "store in local folders"

This documentation about Local Folders in Thunderbird should help.

I was referring to storing your messages directly in Local Folders by specifying them as default location (under Account Settings > Copies and Folders) or setting up rules and filters if this is desired only for some messages. This can even be specified on a per-identity basis.

In your last e-mail, you mentioned "account settings". I am happy to try this, but don't see any mention of account settings anywhere. Can you help, please? regards and thanks for your continued interest in my query.

It's under the Tools menu.

Sorry to sound so dumb, but how do I get access to the TOOLS menu?

Tools is on the Menu Bar. If that is not showing, pressing the alt key or F10 will make it appear. This is a good article about general housekeeping for your email. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_(Thunderbird)
